Jelly Roll Morton
Washington, D.C. c. 1937

This photograph was first published in Jam Session: An Anthology of Jazz, edited by Ralph J. Gleason, London 1958. This is a collection of articles on early jazz. It has a photograph section following page 128. [19]

The photograph in the book only shows a head and shoulders portrait of Jelly Roll. However, the full picture shown here features Jelly Roll at the piano, with a drum kit in the background.

The photograph was probably taken by Sidney Martin in 1937 at the “Jungle Inn” nightclub, 1211 U Street, N.W., Washington, D.C.

Not shown in Mr. Jelly Lord (1980) by Laurie Wright, or in Oh, Mister Jelly (1999) edited by William Russell.
